Quan Ice Cream & Coffee House’s range of foods far exceeds its humble name, ranging from rice dishes, to rainy-day-friendly soup noodles, to surprisingly commendable Western favourites. As if the mains are not attractive enough, they also serve an extensive line of desserts, plus super interesting beverages!

We are reluctantly accepting the ‘Yep, I am now very much an adult’ badge as we slowly come to terms with the fact that we are now very much addicted to coffee. But honestly, who can resist its smooth, silky rich texture as it glides magnificently down your throat? There’s something so soulful about coffee, from which having a cup somehow makes everything seem whole and complete. “Oh no, now what did he do? Let’s meet up for coffee and you can tell me all about it.”, “Gosh, I haven’t seen you in ages! Let’s catch up over coffee!”, “Hey, I’m just about done. I’ll see you for coffee after work?” and the list of life events fuelled by coffee goes on.

We seem to be rather receptive to Vietnamese cuisine lately, and our current favourite haunt of the Viet kind: Bahn Baguette! Being colonized by the French has greatly impacted the foodscapes of Vietnam, where such treats as baguettes are a common sight. Couple that with fresh Vietnamese flavours and you’ve got yourself an effortlessly beautiful fusion of East and West.

Bahn Baguette, in our eyes, serves as an exotic alternative to Subway. They offer interesting daily promotions as well:

Heading straight to this place any time a coffee craving hits, it’s safe to say that we are virtually obsessed with Departure Lounge. The cafe gives off a distinctively Australian vibe, which reminds us of Melbournian coffee joints that we absolutely loved.

Wonder if these Aussie signs have anything to do with it?

The Australian aboriginal art that used to hang on the walls further strengthened our theory.

Departure Lounge is a travel-themed cafe, and this is evident through its airport-inspired menu signboard, travel photos display, and the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled with travel guidebooks. 

Roost Juice + Bar @ Jalan Dhoby, Johor Bahru

In keeping with our quirky, kitschy cafe obsession, it was only natural that we would go searching for such a place in JB. Okay, not that we had much searching to be done, as the place was actually recommended to us by the true JB-ian, Buzzylala.

Roost is located just a few steps away from Hua Mui, in an area that used to have a rather dodgy reputation (apparently, this area was the place for some trannie action). But the seediness of Jalan Dhoby has now been replaced with an air of modern vintage, as the street is now lined with cosy eateries and indie boutiques.
