We arrived Malacca a little too late to visit this one place that makes the best Nyonya kuih in Malacca (we’ve never been, but so says the Internet), so as a consolation, we treated ourselves to a Nyonya dinner instead.

We knew that Nyonya cuisine is based on the marrying of Chinese and Malay ingredients and cooking methods, but that was about as far as our knowledge extends. Thus, we headed to Restoran Ole Sayang to educate ourselves on quintessential Nyonya dishes! =)

We were quite taken with the restaurant’s vintage-y look, with its old school furniture and ancestral photos adorning the walls.

Among the many, MANY must-try foods of Melaka, asam pedas remains (for us, at least) the one most sought after, yet the most elusive of all. We are really quite the cerewet when it comes to asam pedas (we minorly griped about this in this post), and the spicy and sour balance has to be just right.

Nadeje Patisserie Cafe @ Plaza Mahkota, Melaka

Our search for mille crepe was ignited when we were looking for a pre-anniversary desserts date place. Naturally, Food Foundry was the obvious choice, but by the time we finished getting ready, the place was already closed! =( God, it’s as if they were not clued in on our anniversary plans! *gedik eyeroll* haha so yeah, we were heavily dejected (more so since it was due to our own doing! *sigh*).... BUT! We ended up embarking on an impromptu roadtrip to Malacca the next day, and halfway through the drive it dawned on us that Malacca is home to Nadeje: THE awesomest place to have mille crepe!

Whichever Malaccan food guides you consult, there will inevitably be a suggestion to try the state’s famed chicken rice balls (which is essentially chicken rice, just rolled up into balls). The problem is though, it is extremely hard to find halal chicken rice balls that are actually sedap!  Fortunately for us, we found out about Ee Ji Ban Restaurant being one of the halal restaurants serving chicken rice balls in Malacca!

It’s been said that reason it tastes so good here is due to the fact that the chicken rice balls are not rolled mechanically, but by hand. We’re not quite sure how that affects the taste, but anything (lovingly) handmade is always better than something popped out by a soulless machine right? ;)

A few years back when we first wanted to try this place out, we Googled it and barely anything relevant came up. Now, type ‘Ikan Bakar Muara Sg Duyong’ and there’s at least 10 blogs giving detailed accounts of their foodventures here! Their rapidly-increasing popularity is most probably due their back-to-basic success recipe: crazy good food at a crazy cheap price! We were hooked the first time we ate here 2 years ago, and have never missed coming back here every time we make a trip down to Malacca!
