The bright facade of Sukiya caught out attention and drew us in for dinner a few nights back; welcomed warmly by very Japanese-sounding staff, we stood at the self-service counter and had fond flashbacks of Yoshinoya! 

Veggies Gyudon

The menu here is rice-heavy, and mainly comprises of beef rice bowl, chicken rice bowl, or rice with curry. The beef rice (gyudon) was highly recommended, and we were quite surprised by their rather pocket-friendly pricing! The substantial Veggies Gyudon we had only set us back RM8.90 (for medium size)! Plus, plain water here is free =) 

Even the extra substantial sets, like the Gyusara Set, cost around RM13.90 (for large size). The set comes with a bowl of rice, a plateful of beef, vegetable pickles, half-boiled egg, miso soup and soft drink. Well worth it!

Granted, these rice bowl sets are nowhere near the best we ever had, but they are pretty decent nonetheless. The beef slices are nice and tender, and the portions are rather generous! 

We'd stay away from the curry platters though. If you're looking for Japanese curry, this is not it. The Veggies Chicken Curry (RM8.90 - medium) tastes more like standard Malay curry. It was very watery and doesn't have that distinct sweetness that Japanese curry is known for 

If you're going for true, authentic flavours, then give this place a pass. But for a quick hassle-free meal, then Sukiya is a good fit =)
