Thai Base. Sounds pretty offbeat for a restaurant, doesn't it? Which was why we were pretty sceptical when we were told to check this place out. We thank you, Azad, for introducing us to this unlikely, but now surely, favourite (we were so happy with this place, we actually came back again the next night for dinner).

On to
the foods!
Nasi Goreng Tomyam (RM 8.90):
One thing that we were pre-warned before ordering food here was that their
portions are HUGE! We completely underestimated the warning and went ahead
ordering one dish per person. When this plate of fried rice landed on our
table, we were sure that the plate could feed at least 2 persons comfortably.
And it’s really yummy too, plus the rice was a little lembik which kind of made the tom yam rice all the nicer.
Thai Chicken Rice (RM 7.90)
sounds intriguing enough, and we were wondering how exactly this dish would
turn out. One spoonful was all it took to know that this is possibly one of the
most genius creations to ever grace the Malaysian foodscapes! The tender pieces
of chicken are cooked in a superb creamy-spicy sauce; the heat from the chilli
padi is what really makes this dish interesting. This dish ranks tops in our
must-try list.
The Yee Mee Special (RM 9.90) also ranks
high in our books. The noodles are braised in a sweet soy sauce base, accompanied
with prawns and broccoli. The great thing about fried yee mee is that
it gets that nice glossy sheen that gives it quite a glass-noodle sort of
texture. A dish so simple and they do it so right!
This is so so evil but we decided to give their Butter Sotong (RM17 for the Small portion) a try. We were happy. Very, very happy. We hope the picture helps to convey our message.
Interestingly,
they also serve quite rare gems like Assam Laksa and Laksa Johor. We decided to
give their Assam Laksa (RM 5) a try,
and we gotta say, not bad! The gravy is stock-filled with the fish isi, and has quite a nice balance of
sour and spicy.
The Satay here is one of the best around,
the main reason being that there are no crappy fat fillers in the middle of the
satay. Yep, that’s right, the whole stick is just made up of meat. Their
selections include beef, chicken, mutton and, our personal favourite, tripe!
The rendang-like marinade works best
on the tripe somehow.
Their Nasi Goreng Pattaya (RM 7.50) is not bad too; lightly-flavoured, with
generous servings of prawns.
Pretty
reasonably-priced Westerns as well: Lamb Chop for RM 12.90.
