This Gorgeous Hotel Will Make You Wanna Go On A Romantic Retreat Right Now

As cliché as candlelight dinners and beds topped with animal-shaped towels can be (don’t forget the liberal sprinkles of rose petals), sometimes, that's just the kind of weekend you need to relax and recharge!

Update: This restaurant has closed permanently =(

Price: RM127.20 for this 4-pax set (but you can get it at up to 22%off via KindMeal!)

Pork-free

A fun dinner idea: having a primary school-themed meal set served in a space decked out to look like a bilik darjah

The evening involved us retrieving cutleries from our Spiderman school bag, and playing lawan pemadam.

Under Pressure Vege Soup Recipe

Here’s what we like to do when work ends a little late, and time is not on our side for the fanciest of dinner prep: we chuck whatever we can find in the fridge into the pressure cooker, and hope for the best.

Nasi Campur Iga Set @ Waroeng Iga, 1 Utama

When the craving for something wholesome with a spicy twist hits (a highly specific craving but a very real craving nonetheless…), this impressive rice set at the much-loved Indonesian eatery ranks high on our priority list.

Not letting its namesake down, Waroeng Iga is a crowd favourite in 1 Utama for their tender, flavourful Indonesian-style beef ribs (iga)!

When stumped on a place for dinner, we’ve found ourselves heading to this quaint little bakery-cafe way too often. Have you tried the food here? Oh yes, then you’d know what we mean!

Sukiya @ Kota Damansara

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Japanese (Fast food)
Recommended For : Casual meals
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

The bright facade of Sukiya caught out attention and drew us in for dinner a few nights back; welcomed warmly by very Japanese-sounding staff, we stood at the self-service counter and had fond flashbacks of Yoshinoya!

Kafe @ Ubud, Bali

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Vegan / vegetarian with amazing raw options
Recommended For : Chilling-with-coffee-and-a-book kinda place
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

We seriously feel the easiest (and yummiest) way to go vegan is to move to Ubud! Jalan Hanoman, especially, is lined with such amazing vegan restaurants, and Kafe was undoubtedly one of our top picks!

‘Cahaya Ramadan’ Buffet @ Riverside Restaurant, PWTC

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Malaysian
Recommended For : A good variety of authentic Malaysian flavours
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

It’s that time of the year again. With Ramadhan just about to knock on our doors, along comes one of the favourite Malaysian things of the fasting month: Ramadhan buffets.

Set Lunch @ Little Taiwan, One Utama

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Taiwanese
Recommended For : When you’re super hungry!
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

A walk around One Utama in determination to find exciting lunch sets to add to our list ended deliciously at Little Taiwan. The set menu can get quite confusing, as there were a few different types of sets on offer, but at least there’s a huge selection to choose from!

Recipe: Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin soup is probably one of the most satisfying things to have, and yet requires minimal effort to make! Here's how!

25 November 2012

Laksa Janggus @ Kg Perlis, Balik Pulau

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Malay
Recommended For : A pit-stop on a scenic round-island trip
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes, much to our surprise!

No gastronomical visit to Penang is complete without a bowl of laksa! With its thick sour-spicy gravy stock-filled with poached-then-flaked fish, it is no wonder that Penang Assam Laksa was awarded #7 of the World's 50 Most Delicious Foods 2011, as compiled by CNN Travel

Ikan Bakar Din @ Kepala Batas, Seberang Perai

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Malay
Recommended For : Diet off-days
Catphobia-Friendly? : Not really (there are always a few fish-craving cats on standby)

If you’ve got a hankering for some ikan bakar and you happen to be in Seberang Perai, we only have three words for you: IKAN BAKAR DIN! To be completely honest though, it’s worth going to even if you’re all the way in Kuala Lumpur and just felt like having some good, succulent grilled fish (not necessarily practical, but not necessarily illogical either. Well...in our books, anyway! =P).

Quan Ice Cream & Coffee House @ Pandan Indah

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Asian, Western, Desserts
Recommended For : A wholesomely satisfying meal
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes, thankfully!

There are some places that are just too darn awesome that you don’t even know where to even begin gushing about them... Quan Ice Cream & Coffee House’s range of foods far exceeds its humble name, ranging from rice dishes, to rainy-day-friendly soup noodles, to surprisingly commendable Western favourites. As if the mains are not attractive enough, they also serve an extensive line of desserts, plus super interesting beverages!

Ramadhan Buffet @ Bora Asmara, Sungai Penchala

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Malay
Recommended For : A family gathering
Catphobia-Friendly? : Relatively. There’s a cat that makes a subdued appearance occasionally

We went to Bora Asmara with lowered expectations, what with the warnings from many a diners telling us that the food really isn’t that great and the place is highly overrated. While we value their concerns, we decided to give their buffet a try anyways. Admittedly, their food is not the best Malay spread we have ever had, but we did have an enjoyable meal nonetheless!

14 August 2012

Dry Beef Glass Noodles @ Taiwan House, Ampang Point

Price Range: Mid-range
Cuisine: Taiwanese
Recommended For: A substantial bowl of noodles
Catphobia-Friendly?: Well, it’s above ground level in a mall, so yeah pretty much!

First world problem: Going to a restaurant you love that is located far away from where you stay/work, and being torn between trying out exciting new dishes or sticking to your satisfaction-guaranteed favourite.

Nasi Ayam Garing @ Batu 8, Jalan Gombak

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Malay
Recommended For : A cheap pit-stop on the way back from Genting
Catphobia-Friendly?Nooooooooo! *cowers in fear*

Yep, going to Genting may be fun. From roller coaster rides, to snowball fights, to breathtaking theatrics, it seems like the fun never ends in this city in the sky. But one thing that really gets on our nerves about this place is how overpriced the food can be! As a consolation to all the cash that will inevitably be spent here, we highly recommend having a budget yet yummy dinner on the way back!

Ayam Penyet RIA @ Sunway Mentari Business Park

Price RangeBudget
Cuisine Indonesian
Recommended ForPenyet-related cravings
Catphobia-Friendly?Yeah! No cats around!

Who doesn't love ayam penyet? Tender, crispy and spicy all at once, the quintessential East Javanese dish has (unsurprisingly) garnered a remarkable following among KLites. East Javanese cuisine is known for being especially spicy, and you can definitely feel the kick here at Ayam Penyet RIA. We have been coming to this outlet ever since our college days, and leave extremely satisfied every time!

Essentially, ayam penyet is an interesting upgrade to the traditional fried chicken. The fact that it is bashed with a pestle and marinated in a medley of spices before being fried makes the chicken meat incredibly succulent! The crispy crust and its addictive habuk creates interesting texture, and makes the fried chicken all the more delicious.

Daging Goreng Telur @ Abdullah Hukum Food Court

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Malay
Recommended For : Mid-month lunches
Catphobia-Friendly? : Nope!

The blissfully awesome thing about living in Malaysia is that there is always something good to eat irregardless of whatever budget you have. Sure, an RM88++ buffet dinner will leave a heavy smile on your face, but if you've got less than RM8 in your pocket, you can still leave an eatery just as equally satisfied. The only challenge is to know all these great budget places to go to. Lucky for us, we were introduced to one of the city's most subtly brilliant eatery by Abang Hazri (and for that, we thank you! =D )

So, if you have yourself a strict food budget to adhere to, head to the Abdullah Hukum Food Court and look for a stall called Hasbee Tom Yam and Seafood. Scanning through their black-and-ochre menu display, you'd probably be all: soup and tomyam... okay... padprik dishes... uh-huh... goreng-goreng stuff... nothing new... menu special: Daging Goreng Telur... Wait, what?
