Daily Shots Cafe @ Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 1, TTDI

Update: This cafe is no longer in operation =(

Price Range: Reasonable! Coffee drinks range from RM6 – RM9.50
Cuisine: Coffee and cakes
Pork-free

This little cafe quietly set up camp in the half-a-shoplot we used to buy PS1 games in, and it’s looking very likely that we’ll be just as fond as this cosy hideout as well.

Mr Pie Man @ Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 3, TTDI

Price Range: Pie combo meals range from RM9.90 to RM 19.90
Cuisine: Pies
Pork-free

A quick chat with the Pie Man himself told us that the café’s existence is due to the fact that he can’t seem to find a good pie to sink his teeth in upon his return from New Zealand. We’re just glad to have a cosy pie shop so near to home!

The Bites Cafe @ Lake Fields Sg Besi

Catphobia-Friendly? : Yep!

Whenever we try a new restaurant, the first bite would usually determine whether or not we were in for a good time. Aptly enough, every single bite at Bites is hypnotic, exciting, and satisfying right to the very end.

A Pie Thing @ Damansara Uptown

Rest easy, Mrs Lovett did not have a hand in crafting the pies at A Pie Thing. The only “Mashacre” here is of the kind heaped with peas, potatoes and soulful gravy!

FIQS Gastronomy @ SS19, Subang Jaya

Price : Mid-range
Cuisine : Fine dining-ish
Recommended For : Enjoying expertly crafted foods without the pretentious frou-frou setting
Catphobia Friendly?: Yes siree!

Fancy foods in a comfy, casual space? You're looking for FIQS Gastronomy. Tucked away in a random corner of SS19, the unassuming little eatery is truly a breath of fresh air!

The menu is delicate and thoughtful, and we had quite the debate trying to decide on our dinner dishes!

Abah & Sons Co Motocafe @ Lake Fields, Sg Besi

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : All-day breakfast and coffee
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

Chancing across this adorable-looking place online, we made a point to drive all the way to Sg Besi last night to give this place a try (we're gonna pretend we're totally unfazed by the alarming amount of petrol we tend to carelessly consume in the name of food).

We are happy to report that our procrastination has finally come to a complete halt. The Sizzling Brownie with Oreo Ice Cream (RM 19) is, easily, one of the most genius offerings to grace the foodscapes of KL!

Call for Nominations: Time Out KL Food Awards 2013

It's that time of the year again!

Yes, Raya is indeed around the corner, but we're referring to another exciting event that's also got us pumped: the Time Out KL Food Awards!

The awards, which honour the best of the best food finds in the city, are all the more exciting due to the fact that the nominees are all voted by the public! What better way to get to know the best restaurants in town than through the eyes of its seasoned dwellers? Plus, the shortlisted restaurants make an awesome makan-makan to-do list! Here's last year's list for your reference.

Nominations are now open until 31st August 2013, so head on over to the voting page and enlighten Kuala Lumpur on your favourite food haunts! Categories this year include Best Cheap Eats, Best Healthy Eats, Best Place for Coffee, Best New Restaurant and many more. (We had a hard time picking just one favourite restaurant for each category, traipsing from one insanely scrumptious memory to another, but pulled through somehow).

Happy voting! =)

Joe's Kitchen & Barber Shop @ SS15 Subang

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Pizza, pasta and hot dogs
Recommended For : A multi-tasking meal
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

This simplistic, straight-forward pizzeria was just what we needed for a hassle-free dinner! After having our energy completely drained from just an hour’s trip to the H&M HQ (between the endless stream of determined shoppers and the mindnumbingly vast array of clothing displays in the behemoth complex, we surrendered in defeat and crawled out croaking for food), the scent of baking dough and cheese invited us through the door of Joe’s Kitchen.

One cup of coffee is always a welcomed accompaniment to dinner. Unlimited cups of coffee is... too good to be true?

Yes, you read that right! Coffee Societe, possibly the most interesting coffee house in super-happening Publika at the moment, treats true coffee lovers with a quirky promotion. At a rate of RM10 nett, drink all the coffee you want every Friday and Saturday night, from 6 p.m. until about 11.30 p.m.

Read on for Top 5 Reasons Why We Absolutely Adore Coffee Societe!

Vegan Eggplant Pumpkin Pie

Mention the word ‘vegan’ to us a few years back, and the only response we could elicit would be a carnivorous roar. Somehow, along the way, we were lucky enough to be gradually introduced to the wonderful plant-based world (in the form of excellent lunches at Living Food, followed by visits to engaging vegan blogs and IGs) and we realized just how delicious and interesting a meatless meal can be!

Kokopelli Travellers Bistro @ Section 14, PJ

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Asian and Western
Recommended For : A cosy date
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

We used to visit Kokopelli quite frequently back when it was located near University Hospital, long ago. One of the times that we had a hankering for their superb lasagne, our visit to the restaurant was met with severe disappointment when we learned that they had closed down.

It was only last year that we found out that actually they had moved to Section 14, PJ, in the row of houses right opposite Dataran 3 Two. Walking up the jungle-y driveway and through the glass doors, we were pleased to find that the restaurant had still retained its intimate, homey charm. Beautiful in its simplicity, with white being the primary colour of the interior, it conjures memories of a cosy cafe dined at on rainy Parisian nights.

LOKL Coffee Co @ Jalan Tun HS Lee

Catphobia-Friendly?: Yes

LOKL Coffee Co has been taunting us on our To-Eat list for a few months now, but with its weekdays-only opening hours, there was not much chance of us dropping by. Were we excited to hear that LOKL is now open on Saturdays!

Carnaval Churrascaria @ Damansara Jaya

Price Range : Splurge
Cuisine : Brazilian
Recommended For : Filling up the carnivore quota
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

Having been heavily inspired by Latin American culture these past few weeks, what with our salsa nights and digging around for obscure Chayanne films, it was not surprising that we would end up on the doorstep of Carnaval Churrascaria, vying for a taste of a true Brazilian feast!

Lighthouse Coffee @ Bishop Street, Georgetown

Price Range : Mid-range
Cuisine : Coffee
Recommended For : Cafffeeeiiinnneee!
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes

Yes, us and our endless posts on coffee joints haha! There is just something so irresistible about pushing through cafe doors and being greeted by the heavenly, inviting scent of brewing coffee. We were lucky to land at Lighthouse Coffee's doorstep just as our caffeine levels were running low, and with their reputation as a specialist in this wildly-popular beverage, we knew we were in good hands!

Quan Ice Cream & Coffee House @ Pandan Indah

Price Range : Budget
Cuisine : Asian, Western, Desserts
Recommended For : A wholesomely satisfying meal
Catphobia-Friendly? : Yes, thankfully!

There are some places that are just too darn awesome that you don’t even know where to even begin gushing about them... Quan Ice Cream & Coffee House’s range of foods far exceeds its humble name, ranging from rice dishes, to rainy-day-friendly soup noodles, to surprisingly commendable Western favourites. As if the mains are not attractive enough, they also serve an extensive line of desserts, plus super interesting beverages!
